Stefaan Declercq

In September 2024, Stefaan joined solvo.legal, where he primarily handles cases within contract and liability law. Stefaan combines his activities as a lawyer with a part-time position as a postdoctoral researcher at KU Leuven. In the latter capacity, he is a much sought-after speaker, regularly organizes seminars, and also acts as editor-in-chief of the Private Law Blog. 

Stefaan holds a master’s degree in history (KU Leuven, 2008), a master’s degree in law (KU Leuven, 2012), an LLM (Universität Bayreuth, 2013) and a complementary master in corporate law (KU Leuven, 2015). After his studies, Stefaan joined KPMG law as a lawyer (2013-2017), where he mainly focused on complex commercial and corporate law cases. Moreover, as a trainee lawyer, he twice won the jury and the public award as best pleader at the VPG pleading competition in Brussels (February 2015) and at the Pleading Competition of the Southern Netherlands in Breda (April 2015).

From 2017 to 2023, Stefaan was a doctoral assistant at the Institute for the Law of Obligations at KU Leuven where he defended with brio a PhD on the notification in contract law in June 2023 (die Keure, 2024, XXII+578 p.). During his assistantship, Stefaan also devoted himself to all kinds of teaching duties and publications in evidence and contract law. In addition to this mandate, Stefaan handled from 2020-2024 part-time cassation cases with Mr. Caroline De Baets, focusing on civil law. 

During the academic year 2022-23, Stefaan was also a substitute lecturer for the course of Persons, Family and Family Property Law at KU Leuven. Furthermore, Stefaan is a member of numerous international research groups, editorial board member of the Geannoteerd Burgerlijk Wetboek and correspondent of contract law at the Tijdschrift voor Notarissen.
